USB direct read
Connect the Canon EOS R to your computer with a USB cable and the app reads the exact actuation count straight from the camera.
- 01In the camera menu, set Wireless communication settings → Wi-Fi settings → Wi-Fi to Disable before connecting the USB cable. Leave it off during the USB check.
- 02In the camera menu, set Time-lapse movie to Disable.
- 03Connect the camera to your computer with a USB data cable, straight into the computer rather than through a hub, and turn the camera on. This camera takes a USB-C cable.
- 04Open Camera Shutter Count and go to Check.
- 05When it shows Connected via USB, select Check.
- 06The count appears in the result card.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi read
The app can also read the Canon EOS R over Wi-Fi instead of a cable.
- 01In Camera Shutter Count, go to Settings > Check and turn on Wi-Fi Camera Discovery.
- 02In Camera Shutter Count, select Connect, then Step-by-step setup. The app walks you through the steps below.
On the camera
- 03Unplug the USB cable. The camera's Wi-Fi menu doesn't work while a cable is connected.
- 04If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on: Wireless communication settings > Wi-Fi settings > Wi-Fi, then Enable.
- 05Press MENU and go to Wireless communication settings > Wi-Fi function > Remote control (EOS Utility).
- 06Select Register a device for connection.
- 07The camera now shows a network name (SSID) and a password. Leave that screen showing.
On this computer
- 08Open this computer's Wi-Fi settings. Choose the network name the camera shows and enter the password the camera shows.
That network has no internet. That's normal: stay on it until the reading is done.
Connect to the camera
- 09Windows Close EOS Utility and Photos first. Another app connected to the camera blocks the reading.

- 11The camera then shows six characters. They're part of its MAC address, so there's nothing to type.
- 12In Step-by-step setup, click Connect while the camera shows that screen.
- 13When the camera asks to connect to this computer, select OK.
After the reading, the camera may show a connection error. The reading is already saved.
When you're done, select Disconnect,exit on the camera and rejoin your usual Wi-Fi network.
On the camera
