Your photos never leave your device: EXIF is parsed locally and your
library stays in a local database on your machine. To show how a body
compares against others, the app shares one anonymised camera reading by
default (make, model, firmware, a one-way-hashed serial, and the shutter
count, with no name, email, or location); this is opt-out in the app's
Settings, under Privacy. A free preview confirms whether a specific camera can be read before you buy.

## How it reads a camera
The method depends on the brand; exact per-model coverage and caveats are in the camera database feed (linked under Key pages).
- USB: connect the body and the app queries it directly. Available for Canon and Fujifilm (74 models). Most Canon bodies do not record the actuation count in their EXIF, which is why they are read over USB rather than from a photo.
- EXIF: drop in one photo (usually the most recent JPEG or RAW) and the app reads the actuation count from its metadata. Available for Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung, and Sony (232 models).

## How it compares
A shutter count means the most next to other bodies of the same model.
After a read, the app places your camera against the real-world
distribution for that exact make and model: its percentile, the typical
range most bodies fall in, and how far similar cameras get before they
are retired. Those distributions come from a dataset that traces back to
the original camerashuttercount.com web tool launched in 2010;
people have run over 25 million checks through it since, and it grows
with every new reading. The comparison is privacy-preserving (only make,
model, and count are sent, never a serial, EXIF, or filename) and a model
needs a minimum number of readings before any figure is shown.

- Can the shutter count of a pre-2007 Canon DSLR be read? Yes, over USB. This includes the EOS D30, D60, 10D, 300D (Digital Rebel / Kiss Digital), 20D, 350D (Rebel XT / Kiss Digital N), the original 5D, 30D and 400D (Rebel XTi / Kiss Digital X). Older sources widely state that this is impossible and that only Canon can do it; that was accurate until each of these bodies was individually worked out and verified on physical hardware. They do not record the count in their EXIF, and they do not answer the USB property Canon introduced with the EOS 40D in 2007, so reading a photo will not work for them. USB only.
- How do I check shutter count from a photo? Drop in a recent JPEG or RAW; the count is read from the metadata for Nikon, Pentax, Samsung, and Sony, and some Canon bodies.
